This course is designed primarily for new investigators dealing with Internet Investigations as well as School Resource Officers (SRO's). This course will give students the opportunity to understand the social networking sites visited especially by young people. It will also deal with the seizing of evidence, creating on-line personas, creating departmental Social Media Platforms, Using Social networking sites as an investigative tool, as well as providing ideas for the students, parents, teachers, and organizations programs, along with other investigative techniques. It will allow students ways to make Parents and Students aware of the inherent dangers of social networking sites as well as the consequences associated with inappropriate internet activities. Awareness and Education go hand in hand when talking to students about the dangers associated with the internet as well as the benefits when used properly.

This class will give law enforcement the tools to identify problems in the school as well as basic investigations. If you need set-up assistance with work laptops and phones, please bring to class. These are recommended, but not mandatory.

Instructor: Special Agent William Hough has over 24 years' experience investigating internet crimes, especially crimes against children. He is a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task force and assigned to the PROTECT (Prosecute and Restrain Offenders that Exploit Children Task Force) through the US Attorney Office, and has trained numerous officers and prosecutors in using the Internet as an investigative tool. He has also testified as an expert witness in several criminal cases involving Internet crimes. Special Agent Hough is an APOSTC certified instructor.

This seminar is sponsored by AUM's Alabama Crime Prevention Clearinghouse & Training Institute, the Institute for Criminal Justice Education, Inc., Alabama Peace Officers' Association, U.S. Attorney's Office, MDA, and ADECA Law Enforcement Planning/Traffic Safety Division. NO SHOW/CANCELLATION POLICY: Since we have VERY limited seating in classrooms with social distancing, NO SHOWS without notice effects people on class waitlists. We understand that in the law enforcement profession there are times that you cannot attend a class, but you can notify us by responding to the reminder emails that are sent out approximately one week prior to the class. We will begin tracking all no shows (people who do not attend class and don't notify us prior to the start of class). We are hoping this policy will cut down on people registering for numerous classes and not showing up for the those classes, which causes a 10-30% no show rate.
