This course compares and contrasts key episodes in the discovery and development of the Caribbean and Alaska. Topics include Columbus's voyages, the Spanish Main, the Atlantic Slave trade, piracy, Cuba, Native settlements in Alaska, Russia's colonization of Alaska's Inside Passage, Seward's Folly, and the Alaskan gold rush.
