This course is designed for those who want to take their basic SQL Server skills to the next level. This course is designed and taught by Robert Cain, Microsoft Data Platform MVP.
Decoder Ring for Business Intelligence
Attendees will learn the fundamentals of Business Intelligence. They’ll learn key concepts such as facts, dimensions, and measures. In addition, they will see how these concepts are implemented at the database level.
Using SQL Server Data Tools to develop your Data Warehouse
While SQL Server Management Studio is fine for management, it lacks as a development tool. In this section, students will learn how to use SQL Server Data Tools to develop a data warehouse, using all of the rich tools Microsoft provides. Topics such as code comparisons, database comparisons, safe change methods, and deployment will be covered. Students will then develop their own SSDT solutions using hands on labs.
SQL Server Integration Services – Your ETL Powerhouse!
Next we enter the discussion of SQL Server Integration Services, the primary tool for ETL (Extract, Transform, Load). They will learn the rich set of components SSIS provides, and see examples of those tools in action. In addition to development, students will learn about the SSIS catalog, including the management of packages on the server. This session will include lab time for students to create their own SSIS packages.
SQL Server Analysis Services - Multidimensional
In this section of the course, students will learn how to develop their own cubes, and have labs in which they can get hands on cube experience. Students will complete their study of SSAS with a series on MDX, multi-dimensional expressions. They’ll learn how to use MDX to develop their own queries in SQL Server Management Studio, and then implement those queries as calculations in the cube. They’ll put their skills to use in a user-friendly lab.
SQL Server Analysis Services - Multidimensional Tabular
With SQL Server 2012, Microsoft introduced a new way of building cubes, SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular. Wednesday afternoon attendees will learn how to create SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular models. They’ll learn how to implement their own measures, and how to deploy and manage them on the server. They will also be introduced to the DAX (Data Analysis eXpressions) language, a new language specifically designed to query SSAS Tabular cubes. Their learning will be reinforced with hands on labs.
SQL Server Reporting Service
This section begins with Traditional Report Development. Creating not only line item reports, but also reports that include rich graphical components. Next, the Report Server Service and Database will be covered. Students will see how to manage the Reporting Services server, including key concepts such as encryption keys. They will also learn how to query the Reporting Services Database to glean additional knowledge about their reports. Up next is the new Report Portal introduced in SQL Server 2016. This is the revamped Report Manager from previous versions of SQL Server. The report portal / manager is the location for users to access and run their reports, as well schedule automated execution of reports. Where major differences occur between 2016 and 2012/2014, those differences will be noted and explained for attendees still using older versions of SQL Server. For many business users, the full-blown SSRS designer contained in SQL Server Data Tools can be overkill. The Report Portal/Manger includes a tool called Report Writer. Report Writer is a simplified tool for designing SSRS Reports, and students will learn how to use it, enabling them to guide their users back in their enterprise. Hands on labs will occur throughout this section, reinforcing the knowledge gained during lecture.
Reporting with PowerBI
This is the newest tool for creating reports. Designed to be user friendly, students will see how to implement PowerBI to meet a variety of needs. This will provide them the knowledge to guide their coworkers in the use and features of PowerBI.
If a company would prefer, this course can be delivered using their own company data to create a BI solution. Labs will be replaced with instructor-guided sessions in which students will implement BI applications that meet the needs of their company. By the end of the week, the customer will have a small but useful BI solution that could be implemented, forming a foundation for future BI growth.
