Audience: Law Enforcement Officers or CJ Professionals

Description: Have you ever encountered a person that seemed to want to die? Did they force you to engage them? Let’s talk about what your next stage may have been in your encounter. Were you forced into an Officer involved shooting? Let’s discuss this type of encounter where law enforcement is forced to use deadly force. We will discuss the following topics.

  • Definition of Suicide by Cop (SbC)
  • Recognizing a SbC incident and indicators
  • Types of SbC
  • Officer response to SbC
  • Communications during an SbC event
  • Less lethal weapons during an SbC event
If so, this course is for you. Through class discussions and videos, we will explore different aspects of Suicide by Cop. We will explore the different types and ways to communicate hoping for a different outcome than what our subject wants. Our goal should be for everyone to go home at the end of these types of events , if possible.

Bobby recently retired from Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission as in investigator on March 1, 2023. He spent six (6) years as Chief of Police at Dothan Regional Airport Police Department and retired from Ozark Police Department after twenty five (25) years at the rank of Captain of Special Operations. He is currently serving as a board member with ICJE and Alabama Police Trainers Association (APTA). He attended the FBI National Academy #249 and has been certified as an APOSTC instructor since 2004. He is an adjunct instructor for AUM and JSU. Throughout his career, Bobby has served on special weapons and tactics commander, regional disaster response team member, traffic homicide investigations commander, commercial vehicle enforcement commander, honor guard commander, training division commander along with numerous other duties.
