World War II was superlative in many ways: largest, most destructive, most costly in human lives, most significant in its results. This course will explore the causes of the war, both in eastern Asia and in Europe; the major campaigns and battles fought; the key political and military leaders and their strategic decisions; the ethical questions raised; the influence of evolving technology; and the revolutionary consequences. Using a combination of lectures and discussions, with slides to illustrate, I hope not only to increase knowledge of the conflict, but also to stimulate ideas about what we can learn from its triumphs and tragedies, and how we might apply the lessons to the challenges of our own time.
