This course will focus on the Civil War, the most important war in American history, including not only its battles and leaders and military and naval campaigns, but also its roots and repercussions, and its political, economic, and social background. The first session will consider the origins of the conflict, including the years between 1850 and 1860, and the last session will consider the effects of the conflict’s resolution, including the Reconstruction period. Each of the other five sessions will focus on one year of the war, from 1861 through part of 1865. It will include slides and lectures but also class discussions of some of the most important issues.
